I have a new clawhammer banjo lesson video coming out each month on Patreon.
Each lesson will have a section of me playing through the tune, a section on techniques and variations that you can play in the tune and a section where I play through the in-video tablature. Printable tablature and a downloadable audio file will also be available.
I’ve been playing old-time banjo – clawhammer and 2 & 3-finger – for almost forty years and have been teaching it for over twenty. Join up and learn not only some new tunes but how to make the tunes your own.
A tune is a living, breathing thing. How do you get away from a rote arrangement that you learned and breathe some life into it?
In my first lesson on Old Molly Hare, I play through the tune first to give an idea of what it might sound like. Then, there’s fifteen minutes of going over just about every possible left and right hand technique and how you can use them in the tune. Finally there’s a five minute section where I play through the in-video tablature and the three different variations I’ve written out, using many of the techniques gone over in the previous section and explaining how they’re used in the tab. 25 minutes in total.
The next lesson I’m working on is for Glen Smith’s Going Back to Georgia. Some of the future lessons I’m thinking of are Ain’t Gonna Ring No More, Shortnin’ Bread, Hobart Smith’s Devil’s Dream (or John Brown’s Dream), Sail Away Ladies and others. Let me know if there’s something you’d like me to do a lesson on!

What some previous students have said about my video lessons:
“This sets a new standard for banjo instructional material, and I can’t imagine any clawhammer player who couldn’t pick up a few things while watching it.” – Banjo Newsletter
“I thought there’s no way I’ll ever be able to learn anything from this. Half an hour later I had learnt the first half of Lonesome John… It’s wonderful. Thank you.” – S.D.
“I’ve only been playing 15 months but found I could follow it easily. It’s by far the best video tutor I’ve come across, really clear camera views and great collection of tunes. 1st class!” – N.C.
